University Place has been a centerpiece of Chapel Hill commerce since its inception as an indoor mall in 1973, but changing shopping habits meant that foot traffic was in decline. Driven by a vision to redevelop University Place into a walkable town center, Ram Realty Group set out with a plan to convert interior mall space to outward-facing shops that facilitate both commerce and connection.
We designed colorful wayfinding and bold branded signage throughout UP so visitors can discover everything the property has to offer, including retail, residences, offices, a hotel and ample outdoor space.
With one glance at the name, viewers instantly know which direction the development is going. Just as new restaurants, jobs and leisure will lift the surrounding area, University Place is bringing calculated verticality, which Chapel Hill has begun to embrace, to allow for a mixed-use development that enhances community and accessibility.
Prior to the announcement of University Place, a handful of beloved restaurants and entertainment venues breathed new life into the property formerly known as University Mall. We developed an illustration style based on the energy of the current premises, reflecting the vibes that residents have gravitated toward in recent years.
